Paul sent the young Titus to the distant island of Crete, giving him an important task: to appoint well‑charactered elders in the churches of each city. Titus was to look for men who love their families, have a good reputation, and conduct themselves uprightly to lead the church. However, some people on the island were spreading false teachings, causing the believers to be confused. Titus had to bravely discern truth from falsehood, exhort the brothers and sisters with pure doctrine, stop the mouths of those who disturb people's hearts, and help the church walk the right path.
