After a long time without rain, God told Elijah to go and see King Ahab. Elijah asked the king to gather everyone on Mount Carmel for a contest: the one who sent fire to light the altar would be the true God. The prophets of Baal called out for a long time, but their altar stayed cold. Elijah built an altar with twelve stones, placed the wood and offering on it, and had water poured over everything. He prayed to God, and fire came down from heaven, consuming the offering, the wood, the stones, and the water in the trench. Everyone fell facedown. Later, Elijah prayed for rain. A small cloud rose, and at last the rain poured down.
