The brothers left Joseph’s house with Benjamin and the grain. Joseph arranged for his steward to place the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and then catch up with them. When the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack, the brothers were frightened and sad, and they all returned to Joseph. Joseph said that Benjamin must stay while the others could go home. Judah remembered his promise to his father and bravely stepped forward. He explained how dearly Jacob loved Benjamin and asked to stay himself so Benjamin could go home. Joseph was deeply moved by Judah’s words, and the story stops just before Joseph reveals who he is.
When Judah saw that Benjamin might be kept behind, he bravely stepped forward and asked to stay so his brother could return to their father. This showed that Judah was learning to take responsibility and to protect his family with love. But Judah’s self-giving choice does not mean children should carry another person’s responsibility alone or handle dangerous situations by themselves. Children can care for their family in safe and appropriate small ways, and serious problems should be told to trusted adults. Joseph saw that his brothers had changed, and his heart was being prepared for forgiveness. Even while the family was still tense and waiting, God was still caring for them.
