After the Israelites camped at Gilgal, all the kings of the Amorites and Canaanites west of the Jordan heard that the LORD had made the Jordan River water stop flowing before the Israelites. Their hearts melted with fear, and they no longer dared to fight against Israel. God commanded Joshua to circumcise the new generation of Israelites who had been born in the wilderness, because all those born during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness had not been circumcised. After the circumcision was completed, God said to Joshua: Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt. That is why that place is called Gilgal. The Israelites camped at Gilgal and celebrated the Passover on the plains of Jericho. This was their first Passover in the land of Canaan. On the day after the Passover, they ate the produce of the land - unleavened bread and roasted grain. On that very day, the manna stopped coming down, and the Israelites no longer had manna. They began to eat the food produced in the land of Canaan. Joshua was near Jericho when he met a man holding a drawn sword. The man said he was the commander of the LORD's army. Joshua bowed down to worship and took off his sandals, because the ground where he stood was holy ground.
