Ezra led the people from far-off Babylon all the way to beautiful Jerusalem. He joyfully wanted to teach everyone God's law and help them walk in God's ways. Soon some leaders came to Ezra with worried faces and told him, "Many people have forgotten God's special covenant, and their hearts are slowly turning away from Him." Ezra's heart grew heavy. He was not angry; he was sorrowful, because he loved the people and did not want to see them drift away from God. He tore his robe, knelt down, and quietly wept. When the people saw this man who loved them crying, they gathered around and felt sorrow too. At evening Ezra went into God's temple, knelt, lifted his hands, and prayed, "Dear God, please help Your people remember Your love and return to You." Slowly fathers, mothers, grandparents, and even children knelt beside Ezra and confessed their sins together. The temple felt warm and peaceful, as if God were giving them a gentle embrace. Ezra stood up with tears still in his eyes but hope in his heart: "God is so kind!" Under the beautiful stars, they stepped into a new beginning together. This story reminds us that God does not despise a broken and contrite heart; when we humbly confess and repent, His grace renews us.
