As Jesus was drawing near Jerusalem, many people thought that the kingdom of God was about to appear, and they pressed around him to wait for it. So Jesus told a parable. A nobleman was about to travel to a faraway country to be crowned king. Before leaving, he called his ten servants and gave each one a mina of silver, saying, "Do business with this until I come back." Some servants were very responsible and used the silver wisely. One made the single mina into ten, and another made one mina into five. But one servant wrapped his mina in a handkerchief and did nothing with it. After many days the nobleman returned as king, and he called all ten servants to see how each had used what their master entrusted to them. The servant who earned ten minas was given authority over ten cities, and the one who earned five minas was given authority over five cities. They were both good servants who were "faithful in a very little." But the servant who hid his mina was rebuked, because he refused to do his part and failed the trust his master had given him. This parable teaches us that everyone has a "mina" from God in their hands. It may be time, talent, or a heart willing to serve. Faithful children use it well, but the lazy will be rebuked. Let us be servants who are responsible and faithful, so that our master will rejoice.
