Solomon offered sacrifices at Gibeon. That night God appeared to him in a dream and told him to ask for whatever he wished. Solomon did not ask for riches or long life; humbly, he asked for a discerning heart to judge God's people and tell right from wrong. God was greatly pleased and granted him unmatched wisdom, along with riches and honor he had not asked for. Soon after, Solomon judged the case of two women claiming the same baby with such wisdom that all Israel held their king in awe.
Solomon did not ask for riches or long life; he humbly asked for a wise heart to discern good and evil so he could lead God's people. God was so pleased that He gave Solomon both unmatched wisdom and the riches and honor he had not even asked for. True wisdom comes from the fear of God and a humble heart. When we faithfully seek wisdom for the good of others, God delights to give Himself — and so much more besides.
