Paul saw a vision of a Macedonian calling for help, so he and Silas crossed the sea to Philippi. By the river they met Lydia, who believed in Jesus and welcomed them into her home. Paul cast out an evil spirit from a slave girl, which angered her owners. They dragged Paul and Silas before the magistrates, who had them beaten and thrown into prison. At midnight Paul and Silas sang praises to God, and suddenly an earthquake shook the prison—every door flew open and every chain fell off. The terrified jailer asked, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus!” That night the jailer and his whole family believed and were baptized, filled with great joy.
