When they came to Golgotha, the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross, and above his head they placed a board that read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” The soldiers cast lots for his garments. Two robbers were crucified with him. Darkness covered the whole land. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He cried out again loudly, and then he breathed his last.
Jesus was crucified and suffered great pain. People mocked him, saying he could save others but not himself. In fact, Jesus had the full ability to come down from the cross, but he chose to stay there because he died to save everyone. Darkness across the land showed this was no ordinary death, but the most crucial moment in God's salvation plan. Jesus' sacrifice teaches us what the greatest love is—to give up oneself for others.
