The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus asked to see a coin, then said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's,” and everyone marveled at His answer. The Sadducees came next, hoping to puzzle Jesus with a question about the resurrection, but He told them they did not understand the Scriptures or the power of God. Then a teacher of the law asked which commandment is the greatest. Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind,” and added, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments. Finally Jesus asked them whose son the Christ is, and no one dared answer Him.
