King Nebuchadnezzar had a strange dream: a great tree that reached to the sky was ordered cut down by an angel, leaving only the stump bound with bands of iron and bronze; that man would live like an animal eating grass for seven years. Wise Daniel interpreted the dream and urged the king to humble himself, repent, do justice, and show mercy to the poor, so the trouble might be turned away. But the king would not listen. A year later, on the roof of his palace the king said proudly, "Is not this great Babylon, which I have built as a royal residence by my mighty power?" The words were still in his mouth when a voice came from heaven. The king was driven from people, lived with wild beasts, and ate grass like an ox. When he finally lifted up his eyes to heaven and acknowledged that the Most High rules, his reason returned to him. Restored to honor, he proclaimed to all peoples: the King of heaven is most high and everlasting, and those who walk in pride He is able to abase.
