The Lord told Moses that every firstborn in Israel belonged to Him. Moses taught the people to remember that the Lord brought them out of the house of slavery in Egypt by His strong hand, and to keep the appointed remembrance with unleavened bread year by year. Parents were to tell their children the story of salvation and explain why firstborn animals and firstborn sons were set apart and redeemed. This sign reminded Israel that life and rescue come from the Lord, and that His mighty salvation should be remembered from generation to generation.
