The kings of Aram and Israel joined together to attack Judah, and King Ahaz and the people were terrified. God sent the prophet Isaiah to comfort Ahaz: do not be afraid, for the enemies' plan will not succeed. God told Ahaz to ask for a sign to strengthen his faith, but Ahaz pretended to be devout and refused. So God Himself gave a wonderful sign: a virgin would conceive and bear a son, and his name would be Immanuel, which means "God is with us." This promise went far beyond Ahaz's own unbelief — it announced to all peoples that God Himself would come among His people. However hard the road we walk, He is faithfully with us. We are called to respond in faith, trusting His word and trusting His presence.
When powerful enemies joined together to attack Judah, King Ahaz's heart was filled with fear. God reached out to him, telling him to ask for a sign to strengthen his faith, but Ahaz would not trust God with faith. Even though people did not believe, God still gave the great promise of "Immanuel" — God is with us. This reminds us: when we meet frightening troubles in life, do not close our hearts to God's help like Ahaz did. Choose to respond in faith. God is always willing to be with us, our strongest support. Let us bravely believe Him and trust in Him, for no trouble is greater than the God who is with us. When we are willing to believe in His presence, fear gives way little by little, and joy and peace fill our hearts.
