When the Gibeonites made peace with Israel, King Adoni-Zedek of Jerusalem was terrified because Gibeon was a great city with brave warriors. He joined forces with four other kings from Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon to form a powerful alliance and attack Gibeon. The Gibeonites quickly sent messengers to Joshua for help. God told Joshua not to be afraid, for He had already handed the enemies over to them. Joshua led his army on a night march from Gilgal to Gibeon and launched a surprise attack. The Lord made the enemy panic and flee, and then sent huge hailstones from the sky to crush them. More people died from the hail than from the swords! That day Joshua prayed and asked God to stop the sun, and the sun stayed still over Gibeon while the moon stopped in the Valley of Aijalon. They stayed there until Israel had defeated their enemies. Nothing like this had ever happened before or since! The five hiding kings were found in a cave and put to death. Joshua then chased after the other armies and captured many southern cities.
