After the Israelites left Egypt, the Lord did not lead them by the shortest road. He led them around toward the wilderness and the Red Sea. Moses carried Joseph’s bones, and the people traveled from Succoth to Etham at the edge of the wilderness. By day the Lord led them in a pillar of cloud, and by night He gave them light in a pillar of fire, showing that God was going before them.
The pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire remind us that God cares for His people and guides them with His presence on the right road. The Israelites did not take the shortest road, but they walked on the road the Lord led. Seeing the cloud by day and the fire by night, they learned to follow step by step. When children make choices today, they can pray, read the Bible, and listen to safe guidance from parents, teachers, and trusted adults. If someone asks you to do something unsafe or wrong, tell a trusted adult. Obedient following does not mean blindly listening to everyone; it means learning to walk the right way with God’s word and safe help.
