God told Moses to stretch his hand toward the sky, and thick darkness covered Egypt for three days, darkness so heavy it could be felt. The Egyptians could not see one another, and no one rose from his place; but all the Israelites had light in their homes. Pharaoh allowed the people and their children to go serve the Lord, but demanded that the flocks and herds stay behind. Moses said not one hoof would be left, because they needed the livestock to worship the Lord. Pharaoh became angry and warned Moses not to appear before him again; Moses answered that he would not see Pharaohโs face again.
