In the second year after the Israelites left Egypt, God commanded Moses and Aaron to count all the men able to go to war in the Sinai wilderness. Each of the twelve tribes had a leader to help with the registration. Every man from twenty years old and above who could bear arms was counted one by one. The final count was over six hundred thousand warriors, showing how God had transformed this nation of slaves into a mighty army. The tribe of Levi was set apart for the holy service of the Tabernacle and was not included in the military count.
