Jesus was taken to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and elders were gathered. Peter followed Jesus from a distance and entered the courtyard of the high priest to see what would happen. Inside, the leaders looked for false testimony against Jesus. Jesus was questioned, condemned, mocked, and struck. In the courtyard, Peter warmed himself by the fire. A servant girl recognized him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” Peter was afraid and denied it. Later another servant girl and the people nearby also pointed him out, and Peter said again and again that he did not know Jesus. After the third denial, a rooster immediately crowed. Peter remembered Jesus’ words: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” He went out and wept bitterly. This story shows human weakness, and it also shows the beginning of repentance and humility.
