When Mordecai learned of Haman's plan to destroy the Jews, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and wept loudly throughout the city. He sent word to Esther, asking her to go to the palace and plead with the king for her people. Esther replied that anyone who entered the inner court without being summoned would be put to death. Mordecai sent another message: 'Who knows if you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?' Esther asked the people to fast for three days and nights, and then she would go to the king, breaking the rule: 'If I perish, I perish.'
