After the Israelites left the Red Sea, Moses led them into the wilderness of Shur. They traveled for three days and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water because it was bitter. The people grumbled against Moses, and Moses cried out to Yahweh. Yahweh showed him a tree, and when he threw it into the water, the water became sweet. There Yahweh made a statute and an ordinance for the people and tested them, calling them to listen to His voice. Later they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there.
