In Egypt, Hebrew baby boys were in danger. Jochebed saw that her baby boy was precious, so she hid him for three months. When she could no longer hide him, she prepared a papyrus basket, placed the baby inside, and set it among the reeds by the Nile. His sister Miriam watched from a distance. Pharaoh’s daughter found the basket, saw the crying child, and had pity on him. Miriam offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby, and Jochebed was brought to care for her own son. When the boy grew older, he was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter; she took him as her son and named him Moses, because she had drawn him out of the water.
