The Israelites came to the wilderness of Zin, where Miriam, Moses' sister, died and was buried. There was no water, and the people gathered against Moses and Aaron, complaining about being brought to the desert to die. Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and bowed in prayer, and God's glory appeared. God instructed Moses to take his staff and command the rock to produce water. But Moses, overcome with anger, spoke rashly to the people and struck the rock twice with his staff, and water gushed out. Yet God told them that because they had not honored God before the people, they would not lead the people into the promised land.
