A rich young man asked Jesus how to receive eternal life. Jesus showed him that although he had kept the commandments since childhood, he still needed to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Jesus. Because he had great wealth, the young man went away sorrowful. Jesus taught the disciples that people cannot enter God’s kingdom by their own strength, but with God all things are possible.
The rich young man had to choose between his wealth and following Jesus, but he went away sorrowful because he could not release his possessions. Jesus teaches us that eternal life cannot be bought by our good deeds; it is received by trusting God’s grace. True wisdom is being willing to lay down what grips our hearts in order to follow Jesus. Such sacrifice is not loss, but giving our hearts to God.
