Jesus sent the disciples ahead across the lake while He went up the mountain to pray. At night, strong wind and waves frightened the disciples. Then they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. Jesus said, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.” Peter walked toward Jesus by faith, but when he looked at the wind, he began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out and saved him. When the wind stopped, the disciples worshiped Jesus and confessed that He truly is the Son of God.
This story reminds us that even when the storm is strong, Jesus is still with us. When Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he could move forward by faith. When he looked only at the wind and waves, he became afraid and began to sink. We can call out to the Lord in trouble and trust that Jesus reaches out to help us. True faith is not never feeling afraid; it is turning to Jesus when we are afraid and remembering that He is always present.
