God sent the prophet Samuel to Bethlehem to look among Jesse's sons for the new king He had chosen. Jesse's seven sons passed before Samuel one after another, but God chose none of them. Samuel asked Jesse whether he had any other sons, and only then did Jesse send for David, his youngest son, from the pasture. God told Samuel that David was the one He had chosen. In front of David's father and brothers, Samuel anointed him with oil. From that day on, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon David. David then returned to faithfully care for his father's sheep while he waited for God's plan.
