Elijah's day to be taken up to heaven had come. He set out from Gilgal, passed through Bethel and Jericho, and went to the Jordan River. Elisha followed his teacher closely, refusing three times to leave him. Elijah struck the water with his cloak, and the Jordan parted; the two walked across on dry ground. Elisha asked for a double portion of his teacher's spirit. Suddenly chariots of fire and horses of fire separated them, and Elijah went up in a whirlwind. Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak, struck the water, and crossed back — God's Spirit was upon Elisha now.
