Israel, Judah and Edom — three kings — joined together to fight against Moab. They marched around through the wilderness of Edom for seven days until there was no more water for the army or their animals. King Jehoshaphat of Judah said, "Is there here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD through him?" So they came to the prophet Elisha. Elisha asked for someone to play the harp, and while the music played the hand of the LORD came on him. Then he spoke God's word: "Dig this valley full of ditches. You shall not see wind, nor see rain, yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you shall drink, you and your cattle and your beasts." The armies dug at once. The next morning water came flowing from the direction of Edom and filled every vessel and ditch! That same morning the Moabites looked from afar and saw the sun on the water like blood, thought the three kings had fought each other, and rushed down to take the plunder. The three armies rose up and struck them down. This story shows that when we cry to God in humble prayer in our darkest hour, God answers in mercy with provision and victory beyond our imagining.
